First-of-its-kind event showcases groundbreaking skin microbiome research
NEW YORK (March 19, 2019) – Nestlé Skin Health SHIELD (Skin Health Investigation, Education, Longevity Development) convened the first-of its kind Skin Microbiome Summit, a daylong gathering highlighting perspectives and insights from a renowned and diverse group of skin microbiome experts.
The Summit, which was organized and moderated by Apostolos Pappas Ph.D. Head of Programs at SHIELD Lausanne and co-hosted by Dr. Warren Winkelman, SHIELD Senior Medical Director and Head of Medical Innovation, featured presentations from six researchers and practitioners at the forefront of discovery in the skin microbiome space:

-
Elizabeth Grice, Principal Investigator at the University of Pennsylvania’s Grice Lab
-

-
Dana Hosseini, Co-Founder & CEO of Proderm IQ, Inc.
-
Julia Oh, Assistant Professor at The Jackson Laboratory
-
Dr. Tiffany Scharschmidt, Principal Investigator at UCSF’s Scharschmidt Lab
“We are excited about the potential for promising skin microbiome research to shed important light on how we might alleviate or mitigate a wide range of skin health conditions,” said Winkelman. “Nestlé Skin Health and SHIELD are committed to helping medical professionals and entrepreneurs share the latest science and ideate innovative microbiome-based solutions that empower patients and improve lives.”
In recent years, scientists and researchers have become more intrigued by the study of the skin microbiome, the collection of microscopic organisms that live in and on our bodies. While there have been many advancements in this emerging space, much more important work remains towards understanding how the microbiome mediates our health. The Summit showcased ongoing industry, preclinical, and clinical skin microbiome research and highlighted the key trends and innovations in this dynamic field.
“The Skin Microbiome Summit featured great speakers from both the research and clinical sides,” said Julia Oh, Summit panelist and Assistant Professor at the Jackson Laboratory, “It was also really nice to hear some of the industry perspectives, particularly on the accelerated development of microbiome-based skin health products.”
At the Summit, attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with experts through moderated Q&As, networking sessions and a roundtable discussion; that aimed to educate how additional research in the field could help lead to breakthrough skin health innovations.
Representatives from several industry organizations were in attendance.
